Weight & Mass Converter

Convert any weight. Includes tola and maund alongside the metric and imperial units, because gold and grain are still weighed in them across South Asia.

Common conversions

The conversions people need most

From To Multiply by Example
Kilograms Pounds 2.204623 70 kg = 154.3 lb
Pounds Kilograms 0.45359237 154 lb = 69.9 kg
Grams Ounces 0.035274 500 g = 17.64 oz
Ounces Grams 28.349523 8 oz = 226.8 g
Stone Kilograms 6.35029318 12 st = 76.2 kg
Tola Grams 11.6638038 10 tola = 116.64 g
Maund Kilograms 37.3242 5 maund = 186.62 kg

The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms — agreed in 1959 and unchanged since — so pounds to kilograms is exact. Kilograms to pounds is the same relationship divided, which is why it never comes out round.

Doing it in your head

Kilograms to pounds: double it, add 10%. 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb. True answer: 154.3. Close enough to buy luggage with.

Pounds to kilograms: halve it, take off 10%. 154 lb → 77 − 7.7 = 69.3 kg. True answer: 69.9.

Stone to kilograms: multiply by 6, add a third of a kilo per stone. 12 st → 72 + 4 = 76 kg. True answer: 76.2.

Tola and maund

Metric units are official across Pakistan and India, but two older units remain in daily commercial use, and most international converters ignore both.

Tola — 11.6638038 grams. The standard unit for gold. When a jeweller quotes “per tola”, convert to a per-gram price by dividing by 11.6638 before comparing with an international rate. Ten tola is 116.64 g, a shade under four troy ounces.

Maund — standardised in Pakistan at 37.3242 kg, which is 40 seer of about 933 grams each. Still used for grain, sugar, cotton and produce. Be careful with historic documents: before standardisation the maund varied by region and even by commodity, sometimes by a factor of two.

Tons: three different things with one name

Unit Pounds Kilograms Where
Short ton 2,000 907.18 United States
Metric tonne 2,204.6 1,000 Almost everywhere
Long ton 2,240 1,016.05 UK, historically

A long ton is 12% heavier than a short ton. On a shipment of a hundred tons that is the weight of a small car, so freight contracts state which one they mean, and so should you.

Mass or weight?

Strictly, they are different. Mass is how much matter an object contains and does not change. Weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass — take the same object to the Moon and its weight falls to about a sixth while its mass is identical.

Bathroom scales measure force and report mass, which works fine because the Earth’s gravity is near enough constant. Everything on this page is mass, and everyday language calls it weight. That is not worth correcting anyone over.

Cooking weights worth knowing

Ingredient 1 cup In grams
Water 240 ml 240 g
Granulated sugar — about 200 g
Plain flour — about 125 g
Butter — about 227 g
Rice, uncooked — about 185 g

These are approximate on purpose: a cup measures volume, and how much a cup of flour weighs depends on whether it was scooped or spooned, and how settled it was. Anything weighed in grams is reproducible; anything measured in cups is not, which is why baking recipes that matter are written by weight.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

2.204623 pounds, to six decimal places. The relationship is exact in the other direction: one pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so kilograms to pounds is a division that does not come out round.

How do I convert kg to pounds in my head?

Double it and add 10%. 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb, against a true 154.3. Going the other way, halve it and take off 10%: 154 lb → 77 − 7.7 = 69.3 kg, against 69.9.

What is a tola worth in grams?

One tola is 11.6638038 grams. It is still the standard unit for gold in Pakistan and India, so a price quoted per tola can be converted to a per-gram price by dividing by 11.6638.

How heavy is a maund?

In Pakistan a maund is standardised at 37.3242 kilograms — 40 seer. It remains in everyday use for grain, sugar and produce. Historic maunds varied by region and by commodity, so old records need care.

Is a US ton the same as a UK ton?

No. A US ton, or short ton, is 2,000 pounds — about 907 kg. A UK ton, or long ton, is 2,240 pounds — about 1,016 kg. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, which sits between them. That is a 12% spread between the two imperial tons, so the distinction matters for freight.

What is the difference between weight and mass?

Mass is how much matter something contains; weight is the force gravity exerts on it. Your mass is identical on the Moon while your weight is about a sixth. Everyday usage treats the words as interchangeable, and everything on this page is really mass.
